The summer and off-season are the perfect times to step back and strengthen the mental foundations that will carry you into the upcoming season. Confidence isn’t something you either have or don’t—it’s a skill. And like any skill, it can always be improved.
Growing confidence takes time and patience. During the competitive season, when pressure is high, you’ll need to lean on your confidence tools the most. That’s why the off-season is such a valuable window to practice, prepare, and sharpen your mental game.
When it comes to building confidence, the best approach is to start small. Of course, we all have big-picture goals and a vision of the confident athlete we want to become—and the best part is, you can become that athlete. Just like physical training, confidence requires consistent reps and intentional practice.
One of the simplest ways to begin is by climbing the Confidence Ladder. This framework reminds you to take things step by step, celebrate wins along the way, and look back to see how far you’ve already come.
The Confidence Ladder
Begin – Taking the first step is often the hardest part, but it’s the only way to start climbing.
Accomplish a Small Goal – Choose something manageable that gives you an immediate win.
Reflect and Celebrate – Notice how it feels to succeed, and give yourself credit. Celebrating small wins allows confidence to begin to grow.
Stack Your Successes – Repeat the process with a slightly bigger challenge, using each win as a stepping stone.
Continue Growing – Keep climbing with consistency, turning small steps into lasting confidence.
Confidence Ladder Journal Prompts
Use these prompts to track your growth, strengthen the process, and continue training your confidence:
Step 1: Begin → What’s one small action I can take today to get started?
Step 2: Small Goal → What small, achievable goal am I focusing on right now?
Step 3: Reflect & Celebrate → How did it feel to accomplish this goal? How will I celebrate this win?
Step 4: Stack Successes → What’s the next challenge I can take on that builds from my last win?
Step 5: Continue Growing → Looking back, how have I grown since I started this ladder? What progress am I most proud of?
Final Takeaway
Confidence doesn’t happen overnight—it’s built one step at a time. Use the ladder, pair it with journaling, and remember: every win, no matter how small, is proof that you’re moving closer to the confident athlete you’re becoming.
